Baso Jeletot, The Spiciest Meatballs I've Ever Eaten So Far

Tahu Jelotot, a hot and spicy tofu, was a phenomenon when it first came out. I remember when it first debuted near my University in 2012. It was a hit and none of its competitors even came close. 2 years after its release, it had stayed being the best at its field and never died out, unlike other franchises.

And then on a hot Thursday afternoon, when I was taking my Mom for stroll in an area around Jalan Raya Bogor, I stumbled across this magnificent billboard.

It was shining in gold when I saw it
Baso Jeletot, taking the same name of Jeletot which is equivalent to super spicy, but instead of tofu this one is spicy meatball. After publishing this magnificent picture on Path, a few friends of mine agreed to give it a try and on Friday night, we went there.

The Place

The place itself is rather huge, it has nearly a dozen of normal tables and 6 'lesehan' tables, lesehan means you sit on the floor which is kinda enjoyable since you can stretch. The toilet is situated on the back and it's clean and spacious compared to other restaurants. It seems like the place is fairly new since it's clean and isn't too crowded yet it provides facilities to house many people. It's probably gonna be a big hit once everyone gets the word of it.

The Menu

After taking our seat, there's a piece of paper with the menu printed on it. There isn't much to choose from, basically there are only 3 things to eat with 3 meatballs variations. There's Baso, Sohun, or Yamin with either regular, Jeletot, or mixed meatballs. The regular meatballs are just regular meatballs, nothing special here. The Jeletot meatballs are what you want, their specialty spicy meatballs. The mixed meatballs are just one Jeletot meatball with two regular meatballs if you don't feel like taking too much heat.

Baso Sohun Yamin
Regular Rp. 12 000 Rp. 12 000 Rp. 15 000
Jeletot Rp. 15 000 Rp. 15 000 Rp. 18 000
Mixed Rp. 15 000 Rp. 15 000 Rp. 18 000

Unfortunately, there are only 3 types of drinks available; mineral water, Teh Botol, and Fruit Tea. I was hoping there would at least be some cappuccino smoothies or juices available too.

The Food

After ordering our foods and drinks, 10 minutes later, they came. At first, they seem harmless. With the Jeletot meatballs sizing around 3-3.5 cm in diameter while the regular ones around 2-2.5 cm. Here is a picture of Yamin Jeletot with my motor bike's key for size comparison.

Looks so harmless
Then the moment of truth, I sliced one of the Jeletot meatball to see what's so special about it. The spices and chilies 'bled' out and the once pure innocent sauce turned deadly red. It was the abstraction of instant regret. I had to slice one of the meatball into 6 parts, and it really was a challenge finishing each.

My Verdict

If you love spicy food and want to try something new, I recommend you trying this. Unfortunately though, the only advantage of it is the spiciness. Other than that, it lacks quantity and 'greeness'. and also there isn't any other food or even drinks to accompany you after you survived the main course. This is probably a new branch so I hope it'll improve over time soon.

The new branch is located just before Pasar Cisalak on Jalan Raya Bogor if you're going into the direction to Bogor, and the main branch is somewhere in Bandung according to their official Twitter account. Into spicy food and you live somewhere in Depok or Bandung? Why not give it a try?
